Description

In Black Officer, White Navy, Lieutenant Commander Reuben Keith Green delivers a powerful and eye-opening memoir of his journey from high school dropout to an unrestricted line officer in the U.S. Navy. As a Black man navigating the military in the post-Vietnam War era, Green offers a firsthand account of the challenges, biases, and systemic racism he encountered along the way.

Blending personal experiences with historical insight, Green’s raw and compelling storytelling sheds light on the realities of being a minority in the Navy—what he calls “sailing second class.” He recounts intense and sometimes dangerous confrontations rooted in racial discrimination, all while maintaining his characteristic honesty and humor.

Retiring as a decorated surface warfare officer in the 1990s, Green leaves readers with an unfiltered, thought-provoking, and unforgettable sea story.
